Operation Principle of Pulsed Laser Ranging
The core principle is to hit a laser beam with a very short time to the detection object, and the distance from the detector to the measured object is deduced inversely by directly measuring the flight time of the laser emission, hitting the detected object and then returning to the detector. This ranging method is similar to traditional microwave radar ranging, the return time delay corresponds to the distance traveled is twice the target distance.
Since light travels very fast, this solution requires a very fine clock circuit (usually ps level, 1 ps=10^-3 ns) and a laser transmitter circuit with a very narrow pulse width (usually ns level), so it is difficult to develop and has a high threshold, but the general use of the TOF principle of LIDAR can usually reach the 100-meter level of detection range.Pulsed lasers are characterized by high peak power, which enables them to travel long distances in space, so pulsed laser ranging can be used to measure very distant targets.
